The phone rang at 4 a.m.
Her head rang with static silence.
The voice on the line was tinny, breakable, struggling to recite instruction over the ebb, flow, and crash of the ER.

Mmhm. It's been my experience that no good comes from 4 a.m. phone calls.
Thanks for stopping by.
"breakable" makes me think it's a newbie working the ER phone, trying to give the news...which makes this even worse (in a good way). Nice job.
Trying to decipher Captcha 'words' is even harder when on the couch watching Phineus & Ferb between 2 kids, getting kicked every 30 seconds.

"static silence" -- that is a fantastic phrase. And I love the description of the ER noise in the background.

I didn't even consider that as I was writing. :) I like the implication.
